Project start

Right, I've got 15 minutes to write this so no waffle.

I've written up a quick one page game design document (credit for the template has to go to Tim Ruswick of gamedevunderground) for my project, which should be attached.

I managed to write it despite today being my Daughters 3rd birthday and without missing anything, which is a fair achievement for me.

It's only a rough outline of a game but I think the idea is neat. The phrase 'Up in the clouds' has fantasy and fairytale connotations to me, as these types of narratives often feature lands 'over the rainbow', or peoples who live in the sky. And my kids are at an age where I'm reading a lot of fairytales.

So a game inspired by jack and the beanstalk seems on theme to me and is the sort of thing my kids might get a kick out of.

I've also chosen to write the document because I have some experience in product development IRL and one of the real life issues I run into regularly is having to make development decisions without access to the original designers thoughts or visions, or even the original requirements documentation. This document gives me a reference to my own thinking and vision. The details will probably change and my eventual prototype won't have the same features and the systems won't work the way I currently think they do. But I reckon a lot of the inspirations will still be the same. I'll still be thinking about Disney's Robin Hood and the Harvest Moon theme tunes.

Of course, it comes with a cost. Day one of the Game Jams I'm looking to enter this into is just about over, and I've not even created a project folder yet.

That was 17 minutes. I better leave it there.

If you find this say hi!
